 RARE TURTLE STUDY
Rare Turtle Study & Conservation & Management Permit Application

Oxbow conducted a presence / absence study for Blanding's and spotted turtle on a 600+ acre site in eastern Massachusetts. Once we confirmed the presence of these species, we conducted a radio-telemetry study on the population of Blanding's turtles on the site to determine important habitat features and seasonal habitat movement patterns. Our study identified various wetlands that were important for overwintering, feeding, breeding, and nesting for both species. This information was used during the project design to adjust the development layout to minimize impacts to the Blanding's turtle habitat by avoiding some important habitat features and implementing mitigating measures where necessary. After negotiating with Natural Heritage, the project was issued a Conservation and Management Permit for residential development.
